Civitan is an International Organization founded in 1917 whose purpose is to provide its members opportunities for personal development through community services. The Civitan Candy Box/Coin Box Project funds the Civitan International Research Center in Alabama for the treatment of mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. This project is serviced solely by volunteers with 100% of the net proceeds going toward helping people who are mentally handicapped.

The Plymouth-Canton Civitans service numerous candy boxes in our area.  They also have purchased several service dogs for people with disabilities through Paws with a Cause, sponsor the Special Olympics Bowling at Plaza Lanes and donate to Cooke School for their Pointe Store.

The work with Canton Leisure Services by volunteering at the Liberty Fest Parade, Make a Difference Day, Christmas in Action and help maintain Kinyoun Cemetery on Ridge Road.  Members have assisted the Plymouth Community Council on Aging at some of their special luncheons and Ice Cream Social.

The Civitans also volunteer every year at the MS Walk and Diabetes Walk.  They ring bells for the Salvation Army and adopt families for the holidays donating food baskets and presents.  Operation Good Cheer is another project for the holidays and presents are purchased for children in Foster Care. For Focus Hope, member pack food baskets for distribution and volunteer for the Focus Hope Walk.

They maintain a planter in downtown Plymouth and clean Ford Road between Lilley and Canton Center for  Adopt-a-Highway.

The Club sponsors an annual Essay Contest for Plymouth-Canton High Schools where the winners receive prizes totaling $1000.  The also hold a highly-acclaimed youth leadership seminar every summer for teens. Another project is Camp Civitan which is a cabin camping experience for adolescent and adult campers with mild to moderate mental impairments.
